Mailing lists provide the same benefit to a research as newsgroups. The key difference is that mailing lists are emailed to subscribers, typically daily, whereas newsgroups are more interactive. Like newsgroups, mailing lists are topical and provide an excellent source of information on highly segmented groups of individuals.
